Raymond Tan

Raymond Tan, the Director of Tan and Tan Lawyers Pty Ltd, leads a reputable law firm that has been established for over three decades. The firm originated as Charles Tan and Co in 1984, and Raymond took over the practice from his brother, Charles Tan, in July 2003.

From a tender age of 15, Raymond aspired to become a lawyer, driven by his desire to assist those who are less fortunate and unable to defend themselves. His brother, Charles, who was already a lawyer, played a crucial role in instilling in Raymond a deep passion for the legal profession. In September 1988, Raymond was admitted to the English Bar at Inner Temple, UK. Subsequently, in March 1990, he was called to the Western Australia Bar.

Raymond made history on 19th December 2003 by becoming the first Asian Notary Public. He firmly believes that a lawyer’s primary responsibility is to safeguard their client’s best interests. To achieve this, it is vital for lawyers to maintain objectivity. Raymond often illustrates this concept using an analogy: imagine a client swimming in a treacherous swamp teeming with crocodiles. The client does not want their lawyer to join them in the swamp; instead, they rely on their lawyer to stand on the riverbank and guide them away from danger. This level of guidance can only be achieved if the lawyer remains emotionally detached from the client’s issues.

For eleven consecutive years, he has dedicated himself to raising funds for the homeless by partaking in the annual CEO Sleepout, where he experiences life as a homeless lawyer first-hand.
